The Uzumaki clan have worshipped the nine tailed fox as their guardian deity. But tragedy struck the clan, when Naruto was only a baby that clan came under attack by unknown forces searching for the power of the nine tailed fox. In order to save their son and protect the nine tails Minato and Kushina performed a ritual binding the spirit of the nine tails to Naruto's soul. Now they are one in the same so when Naruto gets angry or excited fox tail and ears will appear and his eyes will turn crimson when angered.
